I’ll tell you right now to not waste your money getting one at all. A lot of police are now using what is called Lidar, which uses a laser beam to detect speeders, instead of a much wider radar beam.
The problem with radar detectors is that they will not be able to detect this laser beam (which is so narrow that its beam can completely miss the detector until it’s too late). I took a radar certification class as part of my job (I’m not a cop btw) and the cops teaching the class told me that when they use Lidar, they intentionally aim at the corner of the front bumper to avoid a possible radar detector.
One of the instructors even told us that he pulled a guy over that had a brand new state-of-the-art detector and the guy said that the cop couldn’t have used radar to catch him since the detector didn’t go off. Either that, or the detector was not working right. The cop showed him the display of his speed and that it was using laser instead.
So basically, what I do is just keep my eyes peeled when my speeds go up. Look up on-ramps on the freeway too, as cops like to camp there. Also, don’t weave through traffic, a cop won’t even need radar to see you from a distance.
Hope this helps!
Don’t waste your time or money! They don’t work and the fine (in Illinois at least ) is doubled if there is one in your car!
Don’t waste your money, they don’t work. Traffic officers cite people all the time for speed, and the people being cited happen to have those "top of the line" detectors.
Plus, as an officer, I don’t even have to have a radar to cite you for a speed violation. And, most traffic officers go to a school that certifies them to make an educated guess at your speed.
If you just want it there to make you look cool, put it up there, but I cite people all the time who have those dumb things.
I don’t think asking this question on Yahoo answers is going to give you the best answer.
The best brand of radar detector is entirely dependent upon what country and state you live in.
Contrary to the other answers given here to date, they do work, and do work well. Yes Laser (lidar) is harder to get advanced warning on, but there are other products to deal with laser, such as Veil and Blinder.
Assuming you are in the US, and assuming you are in a state that doesn’t ban their use, the best is the Valentine One, Bel RX65, Bel STi or Escort X50. If they are illegal in your state, then there is only one detector that is invisible to police radar detector DETECTORS and that is the Bel STi.
If you want to spend less money than those above, I would recommend one of the cheaper Bel’s or at the very least a Whistler Pro78. Don’t bother with a Cobra or any other brand not mentioned above, you can trust me (an enthusiast of many years) on that one.
